Michael H Edwards , DVM

Dr. Edwards was born in Laurel, Mississippi, and has spent his entire life in southern Louisiana and Mississippi. He graduated from Behrman High School in Algiers, LA. His pre-vet courses were taken at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, where he earned a B.S. degree in Agriculture. He then attended the LSU school of Veterinary Medicine, from which he graduated in 1981 in the 5th graduating class.

A mixed animal practice in Jackson, MS was the beginning of Dr. Edwards' career. He treated farm and ranch animals, as well as cats and dogs. He continued his career at Gentilly Veterinary Hospital, one of New Orleans' oldest animal clinics. After practicing for three years with Dr. Michael Gibbs, owner and operator of Gentilly Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Edwards was assigned to open a satellite clinic in Slidell. Three months later, the Slidell clinic was so active that it required a full-time veterinarian, and Drs. Gibbs and Edwards agreed to split into two separate practices. Thus, Pontchartrain Animal Hospital was born.

In the five years that followed, Dr. Edwards opened up a satellite hospital in Pearl River, and about a year later, purchased Aark Animal Hospital on Gause Blvd. in Slidell, renaming it Cross Gates Animal Hospital. After constructing the log cabin on Pontchartrain Drive in 1994-95, he decided that all of his efforts should go into one practice, and he closed his satellite clinics.

In June of 2001, an agreement was made with Dr. Raymond Lezina of St. Tammany Animal Hospital to merge their practices into one well-equipped, progressive hospital. With the addition of Dr. Lezina's long established practice, an optimum care facility is available on the Northshore of Slidell, Louisiana.

Dr. Edwards is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, and the Mississippi Veterinary Medical Association.

On December 17, 2009, Dr. Michael Edwards was presented a plaque from the Department of Homeland Security which reads "Presented to Veterinary and Kennel Staff at Pontchartrain Animal Hospital In appreciation for your outstanding dedication and hard work in providing excellent care to the New Orleans U.S. Customs and Border Protection Canine Unit. The veterinarian and kennel staff play a vital role in the success of our canine program. Dr. Mike Edwards and his staff are always willing to go that extra mile with regards to medical issues, treatments, and their daily needs. CBP canines housed since 1998."
